A fence is a line on the ground

Almost everything in this book is priced per linear foot, including the footings: posts at eight foot centers means feet and posts are the same number wearing a different hat, and a price book that asks the estimator to count holes gets abandoned on the second quote. The concrete still comes out in bags on the takeoff, because that is how it is bought.

The two lines most fence quotes are missing

Taking the old fence out is one line and getting rid of it is another. The second one is a scale ticket at the transfer station, it is never small, and it is the single most commonly forgotten line in this trade. A quote with demolition and no disposal gets a warning before it goes out.

Gates are counted, never run through the rate

Braced, hung, latched, with a drop rod into a concrete pad: most of a day of fiddling for one unit of something. Pricing it per foot of fence is how a three-gate job turns into a day of free labor.
